Autograph letter signed ("Jas.Monroe") to "Mr. & Mrs. M[adison]," Alb[emarle County, Va.,], 6 February 1798. 1 full page, oblong (6 7/8 x 7¼ in.), one corner chipped, light stains, folds neatly reinforced from verso . MONROE SENDS FURNITURE AND LINENS TO HIS NEIGHBORS, JAMES AND DOLLEY MADISON Monroe had returned to the U.S. in June 1997 after Washington removed him as Minister to France; he "began to build a house a few miles from Monticello, and thus furnished the Madisons with another reason for pleasant visits in that direction" (R. Ketcham, James Madison , p.388). Monroe, soon to be elected Governor of Virginia, here arranges to send a wagon of furniture and linens to his new neighbors James and Dolley Madison, and thanks them in turn for certain gifts: "We are very thankful for the articles yrself & Mrs. M were so good as [to] send us. They are really rarities and of importance in our present situation. We should however be very sorry if you reduc'd your own stock so as to feel the want of them. We send you two mattresses - one of hair & another of wool, 4 dozen of the better kind of diaper napkins & 2 of inf[an]ts...4 table clothes, 2 of them size for a room of 18 feet -- 2 others of great length which may each be cut either in two or three...we would add many more if you had desired, but that may still be done at another time. We have not more of kitchen furniture that will be sufficient for two families. I shall not dispose of any yet...for the present so that you may have what you want. The wagon is in great haste so that I have only time to request our best regards to Mrs. M. yr. Father & family. Sincerely yr. Friend & servant..." Provenance : Paul C. Richards 1983.
