Predicated on the 1796 land act, granting of land to U.S. veterans was common during the early years of the nation's growth. Monroe made many grants to veterans of the War of 1812, including Gorrell, a Virginia native who served under General Hull in his march to Detroit. This document grants Gorrell a quarter portion of section 7 of township 13 of the Ohio Military District, and area that is now in the vicinity of Fredericktown, OH.
