MONDRIAAN, Pieter Cornelis (1872-1944). Three autograph letters signed ('Piet') and an autograph postcard signed to Dop Bles, Laren and Amsterdam, 21 July 1912 - 6 June 1917 and n.y., in Dutch, and an autograph letter signed ('Piet Mondrian') to an unidentified correspondent ('Cher Monsieur'), n.p., 4 October [1934], in French, together 6 pages, 4to, and 1 pages, 8vo , autograph envelope. Characteristically spontaneous, relaxed letters to a friend. Mondrian writes from Laren that he has found lodgings, in 1916 from Amsterdam saying he is off to Laren, and discussing the loan of some money, and in 1917 discussing a prospective collaboration with Theo van Doesburg; in the incompletely dated letter, Mondriaan bemoans his lack of work, although he has a commission to make a copy: 'Ik zit nu in 't Rijksmuseum een copie te maken, of liever ik sta' (I'm sitting in the Rijksmuseum making a copy - or rather I'm standing). In the letter in French he thanks his correspondent for sending some photographs and promises to forward some photographs of his own work. The lot also includes a collection of letters by other 20th-century artists, including: KANDINSKI, Vasili (1866-1944). Two autograph letters signed ('Kandinsky') to 'Herr Braat', Hotel Beau Rivage, La Napoule-Plage, France, 17 and 31 August 1935, in German, the first including a sketch of one of his paintings to show which way round it should be illustrated in a newspaper ('Mein Signum [..] ist unten links in der Ecke'), and discussing photographic reproductions of his work (in particular of 'Entwicklung in Braun' (Development in brown, 1933), which he feels would lend itself very well to reproduction), the absence on holiday of his normal photographer and the possibility of having photographs forwarded to him, 3 pages, 4to ; RODIN, Franois Auguste Ren (1840-1917). Autograph letter signed to 'Madame Clodel', n.p., n.d., thanking her for compliments on the success of a work - 'l'artiste est trs fier d'avoir reussi', compliments which are particularly gratifying from a family of stern critics - 'dans la maison de Matre Clodel j'ai toujours peur', 1 page, 8vo , autograph envelope; and autograph letters signed by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1935, about his photography, 1 page, 4to ), Giorgo de Chirico (1934, discussing his conditions for an exhibition, including a list of paintings he intends to exhibit, with dates and prices), Henry Moore (1945, about a proposed exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art in Amsterdam), Gino Severini (5, 1913-1922 and n.d., 3 of them on 'Movimento Futurista' headed paper), Kees van Dongen (writing from Montmartre in 1901: the day has been too beautiful for him to be able to sketch), M.C. Esher, Paul Signac (1, and 1 autograph postcard), James Ensor Kathe Kollwitz (postcard), Thophile Alexandre Steinlen (2), M. Campigli, Edgar Tytgat, Felix Tobeen, O. Zadkine and others, together 25 letters and postcards, approximately 50 pages, 8vo and 4to . (33)
