.69 caliber, 42" round barrel with large V P and eagle, dated 1854 on the tang. Barrel is rifled with four lands and grooves. A long lift-up rear barrel sight with blued leaf that lifts up and the sides of the base are graduated. High 7/16" iron front sight brazed to the band. Marked Colts Patent around the end of the drum. Lockplate with eagle and US forward of the hammer. In the rear of lockplate it is dated 1854. All of the bands have a fancy "6" stamped into the right side. Top of buttplate is marked J G 62. Top buttplate screw has a "6" stamped it to the head. Triggerguard has a "6" in the forward part of the guard. Iron sideplate has "6." Sideplate screws have a number "6" stamped into the heads. Stamped in the wood along the tang is the number 1540. This is from the famous Brooks Collection, later known as the U.S Cartridge Company Collection. Brass tip ramrod walnut stock. Provenance: U.S. Cartridge Collection Condition: All markings are very sharp and crisp. Rear sight leaf has most of the original blue finish. Barrel is smooth and bright with some brown staining. All of the bands are sharp and crisp with a nice light brown patina that blends with the barrel. Lock and hammer have a crisp look with some brown staining. Triggerguard has a mint look with some light brown patina. Bands and buttplate have nice sharp edges with light patina. Stock has mint dark open-grained wood with a mint cartouche on the left side opposite of the lock. Overall this is a great example of this rare U.S. military arm.
