Annie Laurie Williams, who was associated with the literary agent of McIntosh and Otis, was retained a month before publication and was in large part responsible for the success of the book. Mitchell herself did not have confidence that the book was suitable for filming, and it was Williams' efforts that got it placed with David Selznick, earning the author a substantial fortune in movie rights.
