MISTERIOS DEL GATO NEGRO No. 28 * Mexican TOMB OF TERROR No. 6 Publisher: La Prensa Date Published: September, 1955 Description: CGC certified: Fine (6.0). Off-white to white pages. Mexican version of Tomb of Terror #6 (Harvey, 1952). Color interiors. Stories translated into Spanish. Cover: Lee Elias. Art: Bob Powell, Lee Elias, Moe Marcus, Rocco Mastroserio, Rudy Palais, Joe Certa. CGC Census: 2 graded copies. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in any grade. This ish features a Bob Powell story in which a crook turns into a giant rat and raids banks and homes, hoarding stolen jewels: "I can use this stuff to get power... real power over the whole city!" The rat bears a grim resemblance to Nazi-era anti-Semitic caricatures. The resemblance may be deliberate, as Powell is said to have been an anti-Semite: "Powell was a bit of an anti-Semite... he had this great hate for anybody Jewish. Also, people who smoked cigars for some reason.... He was a real weirdo." — Howard Nostrand interview, Graphic Story Magazine #16 (1974). According to Dr. Wertham, comics books were vectors for bigotry, using coded visual language to transmit hateful ideologies to kids: "Comic books read with glee by many children, including very young ones, teach the props of anti-Semitism.... with illustrations which might be taken directly from Nazi magazines like Streicher's Stuermer." — Seduction of the Innocent. Rinehart: 1954, p. 102. Enjoying the Sale? Order a fully-illustrated softcover catalogue for 30 bucks. Only about 100 copies were printed and they're going fast.
