VG (4.0). Light spine stress, covers a bit wavy as if from water wear but with no other evidence of water contact, top staple rusty, staples slightly pulled, a few short edge tears and nicks to covers, light color rubs to right edge of front cover, tiny creases to bottom right corner of front cover, short tear and dogear to last page, penciled distributor's mark ("TC 3 / 19") to "M" in "MYSTERY." White to off-white pages. Cover: Bernard Baily. Art: Eugene E. Hughes, Frank Frollo?, Les Zakarin. Overstreet: "Severed heads cover." GPAnalysis: A 4.0 sold for $382 in February 2018. Heads roll as the Comics Code clampdown looms. "In 'Hen Pecked' a man with a loathsome wife and daughters who have nothing but contempt for him kills them and places their heads atop sculptures." — William Schoell, The Horror Comics: Fiends, Freaks and Fantastic Creatures, 1940s-1980s. McFarland: 2014, p. 119. "Issue #17 features a rare cover appearance by Mister Mystery, who is standing beside a savage who's about to lop off the head of a terrified woman with his machete. A column of decapitated heads appear next to both of them... Gillmor's Pre-Code Horror era is coming to a close about this time and the decline is evident in declining quality of art and story. This comic is chock full of gruesome murders and violent accidents but the artists are so unskilled in depicting these events that they come across more like cartoon violence: not particularly shocking or offensive." — George Suarez, Tales To Terrible To Tell #9. NEC: 1993, p. 19. A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
