Kirkall, fly-titles respectively to Chaucer's Characters ... by Thomas Betterton and The Rape of the Locke [sic], 8pp. book list of Bernard Lintot at end (some browning and spotting), contemporary panelled calf with morocco spine labels and speckled edges (spine restored). FIRST EDITION, including the first printing of Pope's Rape of the Lock . Five poems are ascribed to Pope in the contents, and two more, including The Rape , were later acknowledged by him. Advance copies of Pope's mock epic were sent as separate offprints to persons concerned in the story shortly before publication of the Miscellany , and when it first appeared as a separate piece in 1714, it was extended from two to five cantos. Other contributors to the Miscellany were Dryden, William Broome Fenton and Prior, while it also includes Gay's The Story of Arachne, from the beginning of the Sixth Book of Ovid's Metamorphoses.
