Provenance : Antoine-Augustin Renouard (binding, catalogue 1819, IV, p.249; sale catalogue 1853/4, lot 3,461, clipping from his catalogue mounted beneath La Bédoyère's bookplate); Comte Noël-François-Henri Huchet de la Bédoyère (bookplate, his sale, 1862, lot 2,788, see lot 598). ONE OF THE FEW COPIES ON LARGE VéLIN PAPER. PRICED AND WITH A FEW MANUSCRIPT NOTES IN THE HAND OF A.A. RENOUARD. Mirabeau's early death interrupted his plan to form a kind of universal library, to be open to all scholars and researchers. He started realizing it "with the same impetuosity which ruled all his activities" (Renouard): in eleven months, according to the preface to the catalogue, he formed the above collection; its most important component was the library of Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), the great naturalist, which he had acquired. Many of these books, catalogued as lots 1,128-1,418, had autograph annotations by Buffon which are noted. Renouard's copy is complete with the Table, the printed list of price results, and the leaf entitling the owner to receive a free copy of it. Renouard has added Mirabeau's portrait by Ficsinger after J. Guirin, Victor Mirabeau's portrait after Borel, a view of Mirabeau's tomb, and an autograph note in Mirabeau's hand, dated 31 May, 1788, 11 lines, 12mo, to Abbé Bernard Mercier de Saint-Leger, in which he refers to proofs, an announcement by the Abbé, and an intended visit. The binding, though unsigned, is by Bisiaux, one of Renouard's favorite binders: two of the rolls on the spine are identical with those on De Ricci-Schiff, No. 127, and the inside gilt border is identical with that on another binding by him for Renouard, the Pinelli Catalogue.
