Milton, John Two poetic works by Milton, comprising: Poems, &c. upon Several Occasions. London: Printed for Thomas Dring at the Blew Anchor, 1673. 8vo (6 1/4 x 4 in.; 158 x 102 mm). Head-piece of printer's ornaments; lightly browned, quire E a bit heavier. Red morocco with triple fillet border, spine richly gilt, gilt edges, dentelles, by Chambolle-Duru, in a brown half-morocco slipcase. Second edition, second state, containing a number of poems printed here for the first time. The second state has the address to which the printer moved, but is otherwise identical to the first state. Pforzheimer 724. Edwin B. Holden (bookplate dated 1894); Charles Conover Kalbfleisch (gilt-stamped red leather bookplate with monogram "CCK"(his sale, Parke-Bernet 10 January 1944, lot 634) — Paradise Lost. ... The fourth Edition, Adorn'd with Sculptures. London: Printed by Miles Flesher for Richard Bentley 1688. Folio (14 3/4 x 9 1/8 in.; 375 x 230 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait by R. White after Faithorne, 12 full-page engraved plates by Michael Burghers (one by P.P. Bouche after B. Lens) after Medina, subscribers list; front free endpaper detached, offset from portrait on title, mended tear in lower margin of plate 8 entering image, clean tear in page 151 (second series) entering, but not obscuring text, lower outer corner of page 123 torn without loss, page 341-2 misbound within subscribers list. Contemporary mottled calf, sprinkled red edges; rebacked with original title label laid down, corners torn. Brown cloth slipcase. First folio and first illustrated edition. The illustrations have influenced subsequent interpretations of Paradise Lost, and are discussed in the Riverside edition. A handsome, crisp copy.
