An unusually elaborate and quite attractive synopsis of lectures by a respected military engineer, drawing on examples from Napoleon's campaigns, the American Revolution, and incorporating details of forts in the New York area, illustrated with a number of finely rendered ink diagrams and 3 full-page drawings (one in colored inks) of battles and forts (one being a detailed map of Forts Greene, Swift and Lawrence in Brooklyn, which Townsend toured in October 1814).
