Military RAC Second World War interest - A George VI sterling silver salver, London 1943 by F T Ray & Co in the George III style, of shaped circular form with shaped cavetto edge and gadrooned rim. Raised on four scroll feet. The field engraved with an inscription 'Presented to Major F.J.W. Harding by officers of the 61st Reconnaissance Regiment on the occasion of his marriage.'. Fully marked to the reverse. Diameter - 30 cm / 12 inches Weight - 957 grams / 30.77 ozt Major Frank James William Harding (24th April 1918 – 3rd June 1981), studied at New College Oxford, at the outset of WW2 he volunteered for service and was admitted to Sandhurst on 27th October 1939 prior to being posted to the Gloster Regiment on 25 March 1940, and then transferred to the Reconnaissance Corps. He was awarded the Military Cross. He was married on the 25th March 1944. "This officer has led his squadron with the greatest gallantry, zeal and skill throughout the campaign in N.W. Euopre. (...) on 11 Aug he was ordered to capture a hill, pt 266, North of Conde-sur-Noireau, thereby protecting the left flank of the main attack by 231 Bde. He carried out this attack with great skill, and in spite of heavy MG and 88mm fire he destroyed or captured all the enemy on the hill and held it until relieved. (…) On the 4th to 7th September 1944, his squadron held more than 15 miles of the Escaut Canal near Oudenarde including five bridges. They captured several hundred prisoners and on one day defeated a determined attempt to break through by 200 infantry supported by a Mark IV special tank. As a result of the action the tank and three half-tracks were knocked out and more than sixty of the enemy wounded or killed.
