Itineraire Pittoresque du Fleuve Hudson et ses Parties Laterales de l'Amerique du Nord, d'apres les Dessins Originaux Pris sur les Lieux.
Paris, 1828-29. Two quarto text volumes bound in one, plus the folio atlas. The atlas containing an engraved title, fifty-four hand-colored lithographic plates and a colored map. Modern uniform blue calf gilt. Condition : Foxing. a handsome, hand-colored set of this rare hudson river view book, here with the wide-margined plates in a separate folio atlas. The images, depicting the rustic natural splendor of the time, include scenes along the Hudson and of Niagara Falls, as well as views in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The colored map depicts the northeastern United States west to Ohio and the Great Lakes, and south to Virginia, with a significant portion of Canada, and with an inset of the Hudson River region. Some sets were issued with only fifty-three plates, but the present set contains all fifty-four - including the unnumbered plate bound in between plates nineteen and twenty. “Milbert sailed from Havre on the 1st of September, 1815, and arrived in New York on the 20th of the following October. He settled in New York, where his first work was the making of several drawings of the mechanism of steamboats. He soon, however, turned to portrait-painting, and taught drawing. Milbert was later attached to the commission in charge of the levelling preparatory to the establishment of the Champlain Canal. In this connection he made a journey in one of the large steamers plying upon the Hudson. It was on this voyage that he collected much of the material for his Itineraire Pittoresque” ( Stokes ).
