The painting is inscribed on the verso in graphite: A painter's wife who boarded with my mother in the 1850s--could not pay board--so, gave my mother this picture of his wife. / Mrs. Laura Hewitt Burdick is daughter of Mrs. Hewitt 1939-now) / It was framed, etc. Condition: Board has been trimmed unevenly. Lower right corner is creased. Half-inch horizontal crease along right margin. Scattered small losses.
