(Short repaired marginal tear on title.) Contemporary Spanish or Mexican green vellum gilt, panelled sides, large fleurons in corners, floral center piece enclosing a crowned interlacing monogram, repeated at foot of spine, back richly gilt (front joint split); cloth folding case. Provenance : Martin Breslauer (purchased by Paul Gourary in 1957). FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE FEW EARLY FêTE BOOKS PRINTED IN AMERICA, AND AN INCUNABLE OF SOUTH AMERICAN BOOK ILLUSTRATION AND ENGRAVING. It describes the elaborate solemnities celebrated in Mexico City on the death of PHILIP IV (1605-1665), King of Spain, and the catafalque "hermosa obra maestreada de Pedro Ramirez, insigne Arquitecto" (f.36v). This may also be the earliest book of emblematic designs published in the New World. The 16 plates are each printed in the upper halves of the sheets, with explanatory poems printed within typographic borders underneath. A very fine copy on fine paper, in an interesting binding. Though we have been unable to decipher with certainty the monogram on the binding, it is surmounted by a Marquis' crown and could be read as "A.S.M." the initials of the Spanish Viceroy to whom the book is dedicated: Antonio Sebasian de Toledo, Molina y Salazar, Marques de Manzera.
