MESSINA 1720 -- Le simpatie della città di Messina coll'aquila augusta Rinfiammate Nella solenne Acclamazione dell'Imperator Carlo VI Terzo Re'delle Spagne e di Sicilia . Messina: Michel Chiaramonte, 1720. 4 o (195 x 135 mm). 4 engraved folding plates by PAOLO FILOCAMO FILIPPO JUVARRA and FRAN. ARENA after BARBERI (one plate with a few short tears). (Leaf E1, the adjacent plate, and final leaf supplied from another copy.) Early calf (a few repairs, some wear, spine perishing). On the 18th through the 20th of October 1720, the city of Messina belatedly celebrated the ceremonial submission of its citizens to the rule of CHARLES VI (1685-1740), Holy Roman Emperor and King of Sicily. Festivities were scheduled to coincide with the anniversary of Charles V's triumphal entry into Messina in October 1535 and included illuminations, processions, triumphal arches, fireworks, and a libretto performed in a theater built specially for the occasion. The four folding plates illustrate the harbor of Messina, the festival apparati erected within the basilica and decorated with statues of the Virtues, Hapsburg emblems, and inscriptions , the facade of the Jesuit College, and a triumphal arch. Watanabe 562.
