Autograph letter signed ("Mesmer") to "Citoyen Ministre des Sciences et des Arts del al Republique Helvetique," Paris, 9 Germinal an 7 (30 March 1799). 4 pages, 4 o (212 x 166 mm), in French. An exceptional letter seeking an official medical appointment. Mesmer encloses a pamphlet which will give "l'ide juste et prcise des decouvertes, que j'ai fait et annonc depuis plusiers annes...et d'une nouvelle methode de qurir et mme de preserver des maladies..." Mesmer reports that he has been encouraged by the "revolution dans ma Patrie, et la solicitude d'une gouvernement philosophe," and its plans to establish a medical school. where he hopes he will finally have the opportunity to share his discoveries, for the sake of humanity. Because of his advancing age, he is anxious to pay homage to the Swiss republic, and asks that the minister establish a clinical chair in a hospital, where he may develop treatments for all types of illnesses, and the prevention of congenital disease. He dares to predict that eventually everyone will recognize the extent of "mes decouvertes en physique et de medicine, et leur application utile pour le perfectionnement de l'espece humaine." Mesmer introduces a Monsieur Orelut, "membre de la Socit que j'ai forme Paris pour la Dvelopement et la propagation de ma Doctrine" (the Socit de la Harmonie Universelle), who, Mesmer reports, hopes to establish a similar group in Lyons because those in the provinces should be able to share in the beneficial fruits of his discoveries, for the good of humanity. Antoine Servan, Mesmer's correspondent, was a radical legal philosopher and a staunch advocate of mesmerism. Norman M17. (2)
