MERCATOR, Gerard]. Virginiae item et Floridae Americae Provinciarum, nova description . [Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius 1628/35]. Hand-colored engraved map, 341 x 480 mm (477 x 566 mm). Text in French on verso. (Tear in upper margin not touching image.) A fine copy of the only regional map to accompany Mercator's Atlas sive Cosmographicae in its various editions from 1606-38. This is from the French issue of either 1628 or 1635. It is a composite largely of John White's Virginia and Jacques le Moyne's Florida as interpreted by Theodor de Bry in 1590 and 1591. " Chesepiook Sinus representing Cheseapeake Bay is still shown in its White delineation. At the end of this year, 1606, a party of Englishmen left England to begin arguably the most important colonization of North America in this very bay, at Jamestown... In the Apalatcy Mountains references are made to the presence of both gold and silver. The map is embellished with various game including a wild turkey. Examples of Indian villages in Florida and Virginia appear in cartouches either side of the title. The map's scale and decorativeness make it very sought after" (Burden 151). Cumming 26; Koeman II:282.
