MENCKE, Otto (1644-1707) - Gottfried Wilhelm LEIBNIZ (1646-1716) - Christiaan HUYGENS (1629-1695) - Jacobi BERNOULLI (1654-1705) e altri - Acta Eruditorum. Leipzig: J. Grosse e J. Fritsch, 1693-1701. A collection of volumes published between 1693 and 1701 of this important scientific and mathematical publication; Acta Eruditorum was published between 1682 and 1782 and contained well-known contributions such as the review of Newton's Principia of 1688 (which isnt' present in this lot). The German publication was founded in 1682 in Leipzig by Otto Mencke, who became its first editor, and it was published by Johann Friedrich Gleditsch, under the patronage of the Duke of Saxony; it was inspired from the French "Journal des savants" and the Italian "Giornali de' letterati italiani". It was issued monthly, entirely in Latin, and it contained extracts of new writings, reviews, small essays and notes of the period; most of the articles were devoted to the natural sciences and mathematics. Among the volumes present here there are numerous important contributions such as the one of September 1693 (n. IX) with the interesting article by Leibniz on squaring: “Supplementum Geometriae Dimensoria" and the first edition of the essay "which contained the clearest exposition of the dynamics of Leibniz" (DSB) at pp. 145-157 (n. VI) of year 1695 entitled "Specimen Dynamicum". 9 volumes, 4to (210 x 155mm). Titles in 6 of the 9 volumes, 78 (of 81?) engraved plates and 2 others repeated, some woodcut illustrations (titles with tears or repairs to the lower margin probably caused by the removal of an early provenance, browning, sometimes heavy, some other tears, some staining, lacking some text leaves). Contemporary vellum, the first 4 volumes clean and the others soiled and with shelf labels on spines, gilt title on spine, red speckled (light wear). The lot is sold as non subject to return; please contact the department for a detailed description of the volumes. (9)
