Title: Memorial of Thos. H. Dowling and Accompanying Papers in Regard to his Claim to the Island of Yerba Buena, in the Harbor of San Francisco, California. Author: Place: No place Publisher: Date: [1868] Description: 14 pp. (8vo) 21x15 cm (8¼x5½") printed yellow wrappers. This memorial reviews the history of the case, showing that Dowling bought the island in 1849 and spent thousands in improvements to the shoreline, but unfortunately had not secured a written title at that time. Includes references to the Limantour case (in which forged land grants were used to claim title to properties in the San Francisco area). This pamphlet includes written testimony of witnesses who could give evidence about the historical uses of Yerba Buena Island (including the statement of J.A. Sutter). Other statements refer to the history of occupation of Yerba Buena Island by the government and by Dowling. Quite rare. This edition not in Cowan. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear and soiling to wrappers, wear and small chips at wrapper edges, rear wrapper missing, crease mark down middle of pamphlet from previous folding, pencil notes near top of wrapper; good. Item number: 274507
