Title: Memoirs of the Mexican Revolution: Including a Narrative of the Expedition of General Xavier Mina; With Some Observations on the Practicability of Opening a Commerce between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans... Author: Robinson, William D. Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Printed for the author [by] Lydia R. Bailey, Printer Date: 1820 Description: xxxvi, 396 pp. (8vo) 22x14 cm (8¾x½"), half period calf and boards, morocco spine label, raised bands on spine, gilt lettering on spine. First Edition. With anonymous bookplate. Robinson was a colorful figure during the late colonial and Independence eras. A native of Philadelphia, he was a merchant who travelled throughout northern Latin America as a tobacco buyer, getting into trouble just about every place he went. He actively participated in the Mexican Wars of Independence on the side of the insurgents, and was captured and imprisoned several times. His narrative is included in Streeter's Texas bibliography because of the contemporary account of Gen. Mina's expedition from Galveston Island to Soto la Marina, and their subsequent march into Mexico. This is a fine eyewitness account. "Chief contemporary authority on the audacious filibustering expedition against Mexico under Mina, launched with a handful of men through Texas in 1817" - Howes. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear and soiling to binding, rubbing to extremities, portions of spine label worn away; hinges cracked, title page torn with chips missing, repaired with tape, dampstains and foxing throughout, pieces missing from last leaf, photocopies of torn pages laid in; good. Item number: 272015
