Melville (Herman) Mardi: and a Voyage Thither, 3 vol., first edition, titles and red and black, half-titles to vol.2 and 3 only (not called for in vol.1), some spotting, contemporary half cloth, rubbed, [BAL 13657], large 12mo, Richard Bentley 1849. ⁂ Rare first edition of Melville's only other triple-decker apart from The Whale. It precedes the American edition by a few days. Provenance: Philip Gosse (1810-1888), English naturalist and writer on marine life (bookplates); Robert Mackenzie Waggaman (bookplates).
