A cylindrical crystal vessel with ribbed bands cut to the upper body and a turned foot; the aperture sealed with a red compound (wax based?). 120 grams, 58 mm. Extremely fine condition. Extremely rare. Provenance From an old English collection. Literature See B. W. Robinson, Islamic Art in the Keir Collection , p. 289, etc. for discussion and listing of Islamic crystal vessels. Footnotes Such rock crystal vessels were looted during the crusades and re-used to hold Christian relics, sometimes ending up in European cathedrals. The slight fissure in the crystal gives an opalescent, refractive sheen to the jar when turned in the light.
