Very rare edition of Bernardus's opera published in 1530 by the Mareschal Torches in Lyon. Bernardo di Chiaravalle founded the abbey of Chiaravalle in 1115 and devoted himself to the rise of the Cistercian Order, which defended the criticisms of the cluniacenes, and of which he, firm in supporting the application of the rule of St. Benedict, can be regarded as second, and principal, founder. The most effective, ascetic and mystical speaker, his sermons are among the fundamental texts of Western Christian mysticism. Bernardo, in fact, is one of the most prominent figures of that "monastic philosophy" which, deeply opposed to the evolution towards abstract rational speculation in schools, engaged both in a battle against knowledge as a vain curiosity and in an elaboration of experience monastic, where wisdom and life practices were closely linked.
