MEDICINE] READ, ALEXANDER. The manuall of the anatomy, or, Dissection of the body of man. Containing the enumeration, and description of the parts of the same, which usually are shewed in the publick anatomicall exercises ... London: printed by R. Bishop, for Francis Constable, and are to be sold at the Goat in Kings Street, or at his shop in Westminster-Hall, 1642. The probable third edition; all early editions are extremely uncommon. Modern calf in the manner of the period. 5 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches (14 x 8 cm); [10], 246 [i.e. 446], [12] pp., with five numbered engraved plates on anatomical themes. Title a bit worn, some soiling and wear, overall a sound copy of a book that saw much practical use. This copy bears the ownership inscription of Thomas Perry, Surgeon on the reverse of the first plate (frontispiece), title, and rear endsheets, as well as his notes, as well as other early ownership indications. This is a significant English dissection manual, first published about 1634. Wing says that this is the third edition, but ESTC R15777 raises some question as to where in the chronology of publication our edition falls. An engraved title page is sometimes mentioned, but the Huntington copy and OCLC state that this is "added," presumably from another edition. ESTC mentions five plates, one folding; our copy has five numbered plates, none folding, and we find no other mention of a folding plate. C
