MEDICINE PARE, AMBROISE. Les oeuvres...Divisees en vingt neuf livres, avec les figures & portraicts, tant de l'anatomie que des instruments de chirurgie, & de plusieurs monstres . Paris: Veufue Gabriel Buon, 1598. The fifth edition. Full calf (contemporary or near contemporary), the spine richly gilt. 13 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches (35 x 21 cm); [26], 1228, [113] pp., illustrated throughout with wood engravings. Some wear to the binding, but sound and attractive. The title page has been cut down somewhat and remounted at an early date, and (as in nearly all copies of this edition that we can trace) the frontispiece portrait is lacking. A few leaves have some staining, but this is overall a fresh and attractive copy internally. The blank lower margin of one leaf is torn away. The best and most complete edition (issued posthumously, but prepared for the press by the author) of Pare's works, with the extraordinary teratological illustrations, images of surgical instruments etc. that make this among the most sought-after illustrated medical books of the period. Copies in early bindings are rare. This is a work that saw hard practical use, and this is reflected in the condition of most examples. Pare is frequently considered the father of modern surgery. Doe A Bibliography of the Works of Ambroise Pare 32. C
