[MEDICINE]. OSLER, William (1849-1919). The Principles and Practice of Medicine. Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students of Medicine. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1892. 8vo. Illustrated with figures and charts. [xviii], [1]-1079, [1, blank], [14, ads], [2, blank] pp. Publisher’s full green cloth, boards triple-ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated endleaves (binding worn, and scuffed, hinges cracking, text a bit toned, last half of text leaves faintly dampstained at bottom, previous owner’s pencil signature on ffep). Good. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE (with the corrected “Gorgias” on p. vi), with later issue ads (“October 1892”). “One of the most influential textbooks of general medicine ever written. The chapters describe specific diseases by systems- an innovation now generally followed- and the work’s elevated literary style, coupled with its vast store of medical knowledge, brought something new to the medical textbook genre. Writing at the end of a revolutionary period in medicine, Osler was able to fill a widely felt need by incorporating into his textbook the tremendous advances, particularly in microbiology, that had forever altered the face of medicine.” (Hook and Norman, 1612). Norman 2231. From the Estate of Christopher Grahame-Smith.
