Medals to The Gordon Highlanders and Associated Units from the Collection of A.J. Henderson Four: Sergeant William Cochrane, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, later an Inspector in the City of Glasgow Police Afghanistan 1878-80, 2 clasps, Charasia, Kabul (B/356 Sergt. W. Cochrane, 92nd Highrs.); Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, 1 clasp, Tel-El-Kebir (458 Sergt. W. Cochrane, 1/Gord. Highrs.); Scottish Police 1903 (Insp. W. Cochrane) complete with thistle ribbon brooch, pin lacking; Khedive’s Star 1882, mounted court style for display, contact marks and pitting from star, therefore good fine and better (4) £400-500 Footnote William Cochrane served with the 92nd Highlanders in the Afghan War of 1878-80, including the actions at Charasia and Kabul. He afterwards served with the regiment in South Africa and was present at the disaster at Majuba Hill on 27 February 1881. Later that year, after the amalgamation of the 92nd with the 75th, he was transferred to the latter regiment, now the 1st Battalion the Gordon Highlanders. The following year he fought with the regiment as part of the Highland Brigade at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. After eight years military service, he joined the City of Glasgow Police, with whom he served for over 25 years, rising to the rank of Inspector.
