An effusive letter of thanks to Matthei for taking care of the transport of his possessions and two horses, one a grey which Cardinal Bichi wishes to present to Monsignor Giori. The postscript reports that both have now arrived and also mentions Cardinal [Francesco] Barberini, brother of the Cardinal Archbishop of Reims. The document announces that Cardinal Grimaldi is leaving on the King's business and 'il est important que Mess[ieu]rs les surintendans luy donnent le moyen'. The letter dates from Mazarin's brief Roman period when, in January 1636, he had been recalled from his post as nuncio at Avignon and, after ingratiating himself with Louis XIII and the queen, returned to Rome in pursuit of the most expeditious means of preferment. He finally entered Richelieu's service in 1639. Girolamo Grimaldi was created a cardinal in 1643 and in 1648 archbishop of Aix. His political conniving led to him being described as Mazarin's alter ego. (2)
