Le Cabinet des Fées, ou Collection Choisie des Contes des Fées, at Autres Contes Merveilleux.
Amsterdam (vols.I-XXXVII) or Geneva (vols.XXXVIII-XLI): 1785-1786, 1788-1789. 41 volumes. 8vo (8 x 5 inches; 205 x 127 mm). Half-titles. 120 engraved plates by Pierre-Clement Marillier, numerous woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Contemporary polished tan calf, covers ruled in gilt, spines gilt. Condition : blank margins creating mild discoloration; general light rubbing and occasional scuffing. a rare octavo set: this is the first edition, first issue of this encyclopedic collection of 17th and 18th century fairy tale literature including the very rare large format issue of the final four volumes. The first 37 volumes of this set were published in Amsterdam in an 8vo format in 1785-1786. Subsequently, a 12mo edition was published in Geneva in 41 volumes. To accommodate those who had already bought the earlier (taller) Amsterdam edition, the Geneva publishers printed a limited number of the final four volumes in a format and size that matched the earlier Amsterdam volumes. These octavo volumes were issued simultaneously with their 12mo equivalents, but in severely limited numbers and are particularly rare. The 41-volume 12mo Geneva edition was pre-dated to match the Amsterdam dating and the first 37 volumes are definitely a reprint. The text includes the classic Mother Goose tales by Charles Perrault (vol. 1), the Contes des Fées of Baronne d'Aulnoy (vols. 2-4, 6), the "Arabian Nights" tales translated by Antoine Galland (vols. 7-11), "Beauty and the Beast" by Madame Jean-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont (vol. 35), as well as hundreds of lesser known tales whose survival is largely the result of having appeared in this collection. In addition to the tales themselves, there is a large amount of fascinating documentation in the form of advertisements and notices, as well as an entire volume (vol. 37) containing biographies of the often-obscure authors plus a "Discours sur l'Origine des Contes des Fées", all written by the editor, Charles-Joseph Mayer The final 4 volumes issued in Genève supplement the text with "La Suite des Mille et Une Nuits, Contes Arabes". Brunet I, 1440; Graesse II, 2; cf. The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales p314.
