Double-page coloured map, 2 double-page distribution tables, 81 fine hand-coloured plates lithographed by F.Huth of Edinburgh after Maw, extra-illustrated with the author’s clipped signature mounted on the front free endpaper. Contemporary green cloth, spine gilt with gilt lettering. Condition : lacking title and all text, plates 1 and 31b lightly spotted, occasional slight cockling to inner margins; light discoloration to spine. Provenance : Phyllis Moore (Willbrook House, Rathfarnham, bookplate); Lynn Abbott Trust. the complete set of plates. Maw’s “monograph, the result of ten years of inquiry, was the most complete work of its kind that had been published on any genus. The plates… are marvels of comprehensive detail… From the botanical point of view this work is a landmark; and Ruskin… described the drawings for it (which are now at Kew) as 'most exquisite… and quite beyond criticism.'"
