MAUND, Benjamin (1790-1864) and John Stevens HENSLOW (1796-1861). The Botanist; containing accurately coloured figures of tender and hardy ornamental plants. London: [1837-1842]. 5 volumes, small 4° (225 x 170mm). Engraved titles by S. Nevitt and J. J. Heath, 250 hand-coloured engraved plates after J. S. Henslow, Miss Maund, Miss Taylor, Miss Hall, Mrs. Withers and others. (Plates 157 and 173 in volume IV slightly shaved, occasional light spotting and offsetting onto text, engraved titles browned.) Contemporary purple half calf (spines faded and scuffed, some joints cracked). Provenance : Frederick DuCane Godman (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION. The Botanist was accompanied by "The Guide or General Introduction to the Science of Botany", and the "Dictionary". These were issued with each number, and were intended to form "separate treatises, apart from the body of the work". This copy lacks all but ff. 47-55 of the guide, four studies on leaves, which are bound in at the end of volume V. Nissen BBI 2224; Dunthorne 201; Great Flower Books p. 85. (5)
