Venice: Vincenzo Valrisi, 1571. 4to, 194 x 144 mm., later vellum; upper margin trimmed close on title, a few scattered wormholes penetrating text block on approximately first hundred leaves (occasionally touching letters or illustrations), some dampstaining to center leaves, occasional mostly marginal soiling or foxing, a few marginal chips. FIRST EDITION, of a digest of Mattioli's commentaries on Dioscorides, expressed in the form of an encyclopedia of plants, giving synonyms, classification, description, locale, and medicinal qualities and uses. Woodcut printer's device on title and last leaf, and a profusion of woodcut illustrations in text. Adams M-908; Nissen BBI 1306; Pritzel 5982. Provenance : Slavonic plant identifications written in a sixteenth-century hand beneath printed names on some entries -- "Ex Libris Jois Crans," inscription on title -- Kenneth K.
