MATTIOLI, PIETRO ANDREA. Commentarii secundo aucti, in libros sex Pedacii Dioscoridis Anazarbei de Medica Materia. Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1560. Two parts in one, folio, 305 x 200 mm., old vellum, rebacked with portions of original backstrip laid down, some bowing and discoloration to covers; title reinforced along gutter margin and fore-corners on verso, portions of lower and fore-margins patched or renewed on final four leaves (without loss), some dampstaining and marginal soiling throughout. Another issue of the Latin edition, with title dated 1560, it includes the Apologia at end (with title dated 1559), with woodcut printer's device on titles (and at end) and numerous woodcut illustrations in text. Adams D-669; Nissen BBI 1305. Provenance : Early manuscript title on lower block edges -- "... Coll. SS. Pauly et Barnabae Mediolana," small ink stamp on title -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York.
