From the library of the Earls of Haddington MATTIOLI, PIETRO ANDREA Commentarii secundo aucti, in libros sex Pedacii Dioscoridis Anazarbei De medica materia. Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1560 (1559) 2 parts in one volume, folio (318 x 208mm.), woodcut printer's device on title-pages and final verso (otherwise blank), woodcut initials, numerous woodcut illustrations, contemporary German blind-stamped vellum, manuscript annotations by Christmann and Grynaeus, o4-5 slightly spotted, small wormhole in upper margin, binding repaired at edges Christmann, a converted Jew, was professor of Hebrew and Arabic at the University of Heidelberg. His annotations, in red and black ink, often refer to Arabic sources for amendments or additions to Mattioli's text.
