Streeter (bookplate; his sale part IV, Parke Bernet, 23 April 1968, lot 2109). FIRST EDITION. Mathews was an English immigrant who began his career as a travelling bookseller and artist. Serving in the Civil War, Mathews drew scenes of the conflict which were published as lithographs. In 1865, Mathews moved west and began producing his best known work. His lithographs of Colorado, Montana and Rocky Mountain scenery are among the earliest and rarest for the Rocky Mountain West.
