MATHER, COTTON. Magnalia Christi Americana: or, the Ecclesiastical History of New-England, from Its First Planting in the Year 1620. unto the Year of our Lord, 1698. In Seven Books. (12 5/8 x 8 in.), contemporary calf, covers blind-panelled in the Cambridge style, spine in six compartments, remnants of an old paper title label in the second, old restorations to corners and head and tail of spine, inner hinges cracked, lacking the subsequently printed 2-leaf Errata, dampstain mainly affecting first 30 and last 60 leaves, 4-inch tear to 3Q4, short fold break at lower edge of map, first ad leaf with small tears at gutter, 3L4 frayed at lower edge, 3 or 4 other small marginal tears, minor worming to upper margins in quires 7I-7L, occasional marginal soiling . FIRST EDITION, 2 advertisement leaves (each 2 pages) bound in at front and at end, general title-leaf bound after ad leaf and preceding Book 1 title, full-sheet engraved map of New England and New York (often lacking), with blank leaf 6M2, without the 2-leaf Errata printed at Mather's instructions after the book had been distributed and included in later issues. Its seven books, which focus mainly on Massachusetts, treat the settlement of New England, the lives of its governors and secular leaders, biographies of its ministers, the history of Harvard College, the history of the Church in New England, and a relation of the "Wars of the Lord", against the Native Americans and various sects and separatists (including Quakers).
