[Mathematics] REYNEAU, Charles-René Analyse démontrée, ou La méthode de résoudre les problèmes des mathématiques, et d'apprendre facilement ces sciences [...]. Par un prêtre de l'Oratoire. Tome I [- II]. Paris, J. Quillau, 2 parts in 1 vol., 4to: [6]-xxiv-1/486-[pp.; 1 pl., xxviii-487/914-[pp.; 5 pl. (some foxing and dampstaining, wormtrack in blank marg. of the 1st ff., sl. browned, occ. ms. annot., index ms.). Contemp. calf, gilt orn. spine with raised bands, red spr. edges (faded, wormtrack in upper pastedown and flyleaf). Original edition of this manual of new mathematics by Reyneau (1656-at the request of Malebranche (1638-1715); the two men had met during the years of the author's training at the Oratory. Ill. with 1 table, 5 plates and 1 engr. headpiece with the arms of the dedicatee, the Duke of Burgundy, signed by Crépy. This treatise makes manifest the extension of the field of mathematics that was achieved with Leibniz. One can identify in it some of the basic problems of the methods of analysis of the 18th century (Lubet). It constitutes Reyneau's major contribution to the learning of mathematics and met with great success. D'Alembert learned the basics of differential and integral calculus by reading the second edition. Ref. Conlon, Prélude, - BnF. - Opac SBN. - J.-P. Lubet, "Le calcul différentiel et intégral dans l’Analyse démontrée de Charles René Reyneau", Recherches sur Diderot et sur l'Encyclopédie [En ligne], (avril (http://journals.openedition.org/rde/304). - Not in Opac KBR.
