Massena, in his capacity as `Marshal, Prince of Essling, Chief Commandant of the Portugal army´, reports on the lack of supplies and urgent needs of the troops in Spain, stating in part `... I am obliged to depart and go to Portugal, I leave the two positions of Almeida and Rodrigo very far from having the supplying which they require and which I expected to be able to leave sorted out. I have given the order to General Rouyer to make the biggest efforts to put together biscuits, flour and wheat to be distributed in these two locations… before the enemy will encircle them, and before the raining season. We will prevent this way the misfortune to see them falling again in the enemy´s hands.
