MASCAGNI, Paolo. Prodrome d'un ouvrage sur le systéme des vaisseaux lymphatiques ... Siena: Vincent Pazzini Carli and son, 1784.
MASCAGNI, Paolo. Prodrome d'un ouvrage sur le systéme des vaisseaux lymphatiques ... Siena: Vincent Pazzini Carli and son, 1784. 4 o (234 x 177 mm). 4 folding engraved plates (minor worming to last two plates, upper margin trimmed close in few places.) Modern vellum. Provenance : Haskell F. Norman (his sale part II, Christie's New York, 15 June 1998, lot 649). FIRST EDITION. Mascagni published this comparatively brief summary of his work on the lymphatic vessels, and included 4 beautiful engravings drawn and engraved by Ciro Santi, to assure the French Academy of the priority of his discoveries. He also wanted to announce the forthcoming publication of his full atlas of the lymphatics, which he intended to submit for the prize being offered by the Academy to anyone who could determine and demonstrate the system of the lymphatic vessels. Although the full atlas could not published until three years later-too late for the official prize--the Academy awarded Mascagni a special prize for his remarkable achievement. Choulant-Frank 315; Heirs of Hippocrates 1098; Norman 1449.
