The Historie of the West-Indies, Containing the Actes & Adventures of the Spaniards, which have conquered & peopled those countries. . . . Published in Latin by Mr. Hakluyt, & translated into English by M. Lok. Gent.
London: Andrew Hebb, [ca. 1625]. 4to (175 x 130 mm). Printed in black letter. Full brown panelled goatskin to style, gilt. Condition : title page restored with sections of a few letters in facsimile, first leaf of dedication repaired in gutter, few scattered stains, few headlines trimmed, side notes just caught by the knife on a few leaves. Acquisition : purchased from William Reese Company (1994), $9,000 peter martyr's history of the spanish conquest in the new world. Peter Martyr, often referred to as the first historian of the New World, was King Ferdinand's councillor for Spain's affairs in the New World. There seems to be no real consensus of when this reissue of the earlier (1612) De Nouo Orbe, or the Historie of the West Indies… was printed, the eminent Lathrop Harper remarked when this edition appeared in a 1924 catalogue he issued, "Bibliographers have been sorely perplexed in assigning a date for this issue. It is exactly the same as that of 1612 with a new title page. Some American authorities place it as early as 1597, making it the first issue, while some suggest 1615, and others as late as 1640. Stevens gives strong evidence to prove that it could not have been earlier than 1625 or later than 1637, while White Kennett makes it the First Complete Edition, placing it under the date 1597…" While Sabin believes it a reissue of unsold sheets (?), "we incline to the belief that it is even later than 1628. The change of title was merely a publisher’s trick," all editions are scarce, and only two copies of this work have appeared at auction since 1977, both defective, and no copy since 1981.
