Engraved titles, fine hand-coloured frontispiece in part one and 28 hand-coloured plates by Basire, Carwitham and Smith, 2 plain plates of medals. (Frontispiece nearly detached, some soiling and spotting.) Contemporary tree-calf over wooden boards backed in 20th-century green calf, gilt spine (extremities and boards rubbed). FIRST EDITION of Martyn's work on spiders illustrated with fine plates. A writer, pamphleteer, natural history dealer and draughtsman, Thomas Martyn is best known for his magnificent works on shells. He issued the Aranei as a revised re-publication founded on 2 separate works, Clerck's study of Swedish spiders Svenska Spindlar (Stockholm, 1757) which he describes in the preface as 'minute, curious and interesting' and Albin's A Natural History of Spiders (London, 1736), praising the accurate delineation ‘both as to their size and distinctive marks’.
