(Occasional light browning or spotting, a few small stains.) 18th-century russia, single gilt fillet border, sprinkled edges (rebacked, joints splitting, somewhat scuffed at extremities). Provenance : early marginal annotations (trimmed, washed from a few leaves) -- [sale Christie's, 21 December 1977, lot 118, to:] -- Patrick Robinson, bibliophile (1927-1999); by descent to the present owner. Ninth edition of Martial's Epigrams , the first to contain the popular commentary by Calderino, originally printed separately by De Colonia and Manthen in 1474. The anonymous printer of this 1480 edition is known to have been responsible for only two other books, the Epistolae ad familiares of Cicero and the Satyrae of Persius Flaccus, also published in 1480.
