Beschreibung:

Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834). Revolutionary War General, French statesman and officer. ALS, 1p, 4to, written in French, dated at Paris, Sunday Evening (no date, ca late 1820s)), addressed to his sister, updating her on the situation of friends and relatives who have been quarantined. As this is clearly one in a series of communications on the subject, we do not get the full story, but some of the affected are said to be aboard the English passenger ship The Royalist, at Falmouth, and others at Brest. Lafayette also writes of receiving a note from Queen Dona Maria's residence (Maria II of Portugal) and the Portugese embassy in London regarding the quarantine. He says he is awaiting the travelers at La Grange and will help them upon arrival, as they will probably need to see doctors and oculists. In the closing, we see Lafayette's support of science and progressive values in general when he writes [translated] The newspapers have reprinted the article in the Times which attributes this sickness in the head to the passing of Caron's[?] comet. You know that has nothing to do with it. Signed Lafayette. Condition: Very good condition.
