MARISCOTTI, Bernardino (d. 1649). Giano Guerriero Torneo rappresentatio nella sala de Signori Marchesi Magnani. Al serenissimo Carlo Principe di Mantoa . Bologna: Giacomo Monti, 1636. 4 o (225 x 165 mm). Title within double-rule border, decorative headpiece and initials, printer's device at end. Large folding woodcut plate in the shape of a shell, with letterpress text printed on recto (few short tears, small separation along fold). (Some light spotting, title and first few leaves with small losses in lower margin.) Contemporary vellum over pasteboard, gilt-lettered on spine, edges gilt (stains on front cover). FIRST EDITION of Mariscotti's account of a festive tournament held in the hall of the Marquis of Magnani at Bologna in honor of the visiting Carlo Gonzaga of Mantua in 1636. The equestrian competition was part of a general theatrical event held under the title of "Giano" ("Janus") and the setting was the temple of Janus in ancient Athens. Male members of the Mariscotti family and of the Bolognese nobility issued from the mouth of the temple with their retinues and two dwarfs to participate as "adventurers" in the tournament. They wore elaborate costumes, which are described in the text in some detail. Annibale Mariscotti wore the emblems of his recently deceased wife Barbara Rangoni; since a shell formed part of her coat-of-arms, it was chosen as his symbol. He was accompanied by pages carrying a torch in one hand and a silver shell in the other. These contained the cartelli challenging the knights to combat. Each cartello was printed on both sides and cut out in the shape of a shell with the words of the challenge. One such shell-shaped cartello is bound in to the book. Both this and the following work are quite scarce, with none appearing in ABPC in at least the last quarter century, and with only one copy located in RLIN (Yale). Sartori, C. Libretti italiani a stampa dalle origini al 1800 , 11766. [ Bound with :] TURCHI, Nicoló Zoppio, compiler. Nelle felicissime nozze de gl'ill. mi SS. Marchesi Paolo Sciopine Lupari e Fulvia Parati . Bologna: Clemente Ferroni, 1636. 4 o . Text printed within double-rule border. Full-page engraved coat-of-arms, woodcut ornaments in text. (Few marginal wormholes at end, some light foxing.) Also a festive publication, this work collects the verses composed by various authors to celebrate the marriage of Paolo Scipione Lupari to Fulvia Parati in Bologna in 1636. Rare: RLIN lists only one copy (Yale).
