Sanson, Nicolas [Family]. Afrique. Par le Sr. Sanson d'Abbeville, Geographe du Roy in title cartouche. [1715] 8 x 10.8 in. uncolored. A. d'Winter, engraver. Includes "bulge" of Brazil far left, and Canary, Cape Verde, and Azore Islands in the Atlantic, plus numerous small isles and Madagascar and many islands in the Indian Ocean. Sanson was an early leader in the French dominance in 17th century cartography, particularly focusing on scientific mapping. Sanson was appointed by Cardinal Richelieu as geography tutor for the young Louis XIV and "Geographe ordinaire du Roy" from 1630 to 1665. He trained three sons, a grandson, and other family members (at least one son-in-law, for example) the craft, and they continued the cartography tradition for at least another century. Provenance: From the Estate of Kenneth Erwin, Portland, Michigan Condition: Ca 1 in. tear in lower margin, not extending beyond neat line. Slight wrinkling and discoloration from water, top left.
