(many with initials) to Laurence Hodson, 42pp., 8vo, 1900-1908, several relating to Hodson’s collection of Chaucer manuscripts, the loan exhibition at Wolverhampton Free Library, and particularly the purchase of the Ingleby manuscript of “The Canterbury Tales” [now Egerton 2864]; another starting “Here is the chance of your life as a MS collector: 37 vols of Wm. Morris’s MSS of his works…”, also discussing the work of other scholars on Chaucer projects; the sale of Hodson’s books and manuscripts in 1906 “Why was [it] hurried on so, & no time left for catalogue to circulate in America?”; Emery Walker’s happiness at the success of the Doves Press “The reprint of Mackail’s penny lecture on Wm. Morris at 15s, 350 copies, was subscribed twice over, so that 350 more were printed.”[These figures do not tally with any other records of the publication]; sitting for a portrait by Rothenstein; and sending a motto he has found “Art is man’s nature; Nature is God’s art; Eternal, this; that temporal”, folded, ten with envelopes.
