MANWOOD, John (d.1610). A Treatise of the Lawes of the Forest . London [Adam Islip?] for the Societie of Stationers, 1615. 4° (186 x 143mm). Woodcut initials. (Light browning, a few short marginal tears.) 17th-century calf, “Manwood 23 Forrest Lawes” in manuscript on fore-edge (spine defective, corners and extremeties worn). Provenance : early signature on first blank leaf; William Coles (signature on title page and advertisement leaf); Benjamin M. Watson (bookplate on flyleaf); Arnold Arboretum Jamaica Plain Massachusetts (stamp on pastedown); a member of the Paget family (bookplate bearing the motto “Post Spinas Palma”). Second published edition, with much information contained in the privately printed edition of 1592 and not included in the first published edition of 1598, of the earliest treatise of English forest laws with descriptions of various animals and their hunting, including, in chapter 16, 'Of keeping Dogges within a Forest'.
