MANUSCRIPT -- TRAVEL]. Manuscript journal of a voyage through France and Italy, 1731. 128 leaves (mostly written on rectos only), 8vo, contemporary vellum with fore-edge flap, covers bowed, some minor internal staining , in English. Titled on the first page "A Book containing a memorandum of the towns I pas'd thro, when I went with brigadier Churchill into France and Italy," the journal describes sites of interest including chateaux (Chantilly, couen), convents and monasteries, art collections (the Academy in Parma, the Palazzo at Modena, with a detailed list of the paintings in each room), towns, military fortifications and manufactures, and lists the post towns along each route. The anonymous author devotes a long section to Rome, describing its antiquities, museums, and dignitaries, including Pope Clement XII, glimpsed on the anniversary of his coronation.
