manuscript title over mounted watercolour of Rothsay Harbour, and 57 views, including 2 moonlit scenes by Gastineau after Lady Stuart, most of Bute but also including views of Staffa, the House of Falkland in Fife, Bute Docks in Cardiff, St Donat's, Caerphilly and elsewhere in South Wales, watercolours and one or two drawings, v.s., most captioned, one dated 1849, a few loosely inserted, the majority mounted on leaves in a half-morocco album, oblong folio, c.1850. *** The Stuart family were descendants of John Stewart illigitimate son of Robert II of Scotland, and in 1627, James Stuart (the spelling changing during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots in line with her practice whilst in France) was created Baronet of Bute. His grandson, the 3rd Baronet, was raised to the Earl of Bute in 1703. In 1766, the 4th Earl married the Hon. Charlotte Jane, daughter of the 2nd Viscount Windsor, whose father had married into the family of the Earls of Pembroke, thereby eventually acquiring vast estates in South Wales, and in 1776 becoming Baron Cardiff. Lord Patrick James Stuart grandson of the 1st Marquess of Bute, who married Hannah Tighe in 1818, was elected MP for Cardiff. So they divided much of their time between his Cardiff constituency, where the Stuart family built the docks, and the Isle of Bute (after which the docks were named), where he was appointed Lord Lieutenant.
